Vila Franca do Campo is on the south coast of Sao Miguel between the cities of Ponta Delgada and Povoacao. This was the first capital of the island but that changed after an earthquake destroyed the city in 1522.
The city boasts much to see and do. There are plenty of historic buildings to admire, including a number of churches with great views. One of which is the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz (Our Lady of Peace). Nossa Senhora da Paz is located high above the city. Even if you drive to it there is a set of ten flights of stairs to climb to reach the chapel.

Next is the view from the Chapel. The islet: Ilheu de Vila Franca do Campo is visible just off the coast. It's a great place to visit on a hot summer day

There is much to see and do at the area along the coast of Vila Franca. There is a nice beach, a waterpark, and the marina all along the coast.
