Hiking Logistics

My husband and I are traveling to Sao Jorge in May and want to do a couple of day hikes. We are thinking of renting a car and driving to our end destination (Faja de Sao Joao) and then getting a taxi there to take us to the start of the hike (Faja dos Vimes). Is this feasible? Will there be taxis available in small towns/villages like Faja de Sao Joao, Faja dos Cubres and Faja do Ouvidor?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hi Marilyn,
Good question. I don't have experience with hiking in Sao Jorge. But based on my experience with the Azores I suggest that you make a contact with a taxi driver upon arrival to the airport and ask that driver to be of assistance to you when needed. Get his/her contact info and arrange pick up times and places the day before or morning of your hike and you should be good.

Hope that helps! Enjoy your hiking.

getting around

Hi Marilyn,
Rob's comment is defenitly proved and works very well. When we stayed on São Jorge Island we used taxis and hitch-hiking for getting around and to do the hikes. But of course you need to calculate some time extra (be flexible) when hitch-hiking. For us it always worked out fine and we got to know many people and their stories, sometimes they even took us to some "hidden" beautiful places we would have missed ...

Enjoy your trip to paradise!
best regards,
Christian
