Scenic Sao Miguel Drive at Seven Cities

Seven Cities, Sao Miguel, Azores

I had heard of Seven Cities (Cete Cidades) long before I traveled to Sao Miguel island of the Azores. I was told it was a must see spot. And it is.

The drive from Ponta Delgada to Seven Cities is a nice one. The countryside is scenic and the view of the ocean is good all the way.

The picture that I attached is taken from our drive around the crater of the area. I loved that drive around the crater. It felt like quite an adventure driving along a dirt road with a fairly steep drop on both sides of the car. In most spots it is only wide enough for one car to pass! On our left was the view of the ocean across some farmers fields down the hill. On our right was the view of the two lakes and the village.

This is really a beautiful spot on the island. I would love to hike that crater road on a summer day and take in the beautiful view and all the flowers. And the village is a good spot for a lunch stop.

I am homesick
by: Anonymous

There is no place on earth as beautiful as Sao Miguel, Azores.
I grew up there and to this day I feel homesick. I want to live there
again and experience life in all its simplicity and natural beauty.
The ocean, the lakes, the mountainous terrain, the lush greens, the exotic flowers, the moss covered spots, and lets not forget the hydrangeas, that flower all over the island in early Summer.
I love that island forever.

Agree - it's gorgeous!
by: Debbie (St Clements, Canada)

I visit that crater every time I go over to San Miguel and I and love it every time. I have fond memories of it even before I first visited - a large photo of it hung over my grandparents couch for years and years, as they had come from the island in the late '50s. Photos don't do it justice, especially when the sun is shining "just so" across the waters and you can see the one lake blue as can be, and the other a gorgeous green. Definitely a must see on the island!
