Sao Miguel 2009

by Terri S.
(Toronto, Canada)

Sao Miguel

Response

Thanks for posting the picture Terri. I love the blue sky and green landscape. I know I have seen that structure before. Do you recall where it is?

And, I wonder if it is it an old windmill, a look out, or a storage facility. I suspect it was a look out back in the days of the orange trade.

My dad told me once, but I forget!

All the Best
Rob

The structure on the hill as you guessed first, Rob, is an old windmill located between the villages of Ginetes and Mosteiros. The orange trade lookouts where concentrated more between Ponta Delgada and as far east as Furnas. The orange groves require warmer and protective locations to produce, thus accounting for the central location of the island with its southern sun exposure. The west coast is more open to winds from the North specifically the hill tops where one finds old ruins as shown in the photo.
